New in Theatres This Weekend: Dec. 9th

by Erin Harvey on December 9th, 2005

There’s only one big release this weekend, largely due to a pervasive fear of the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, which opens up nation wide as of today. The highly-anticipated adaptation of the first book of C.S. Lewis’ beloved childhood series is expected to make a Potter-esque splash at the box office, leaving other films drowning cruelly in its wake.

Brokeback Mountain, aka “That Gay Cowboy Movie” opens with a very limited five theatre debut, and Memoirs of a Geisha tests the waters in eight cinemas. Also on limited release is Dame Judi Dench in Mrs. Henderson Presents.

Whereas folks not interested in braving the Goblet of Fire, movie-goers this week don’t have a viable alternative to Narnia, so it just may be that box office numbers won’t be as high as in recent weeks.

From blogger Ron Franscell at http://underthenews.blogspot.com

Imagine what insights might be gleaned if we could send a Desert Storm Marine to review the movie “Jarhead” or a murder survivor to review “Capote?” Our readers would be treated to an intense “insider’s” perspective on the story — the story, not the filmmaking.

Tonight, director Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain” — about two young gay cowboys in 1963 Wyoming — opens in a handful of big-city theaters. It will open in Houston on Dec. 16. For now, there are no plans for it to be shown in Southeast Texas … not a big surprise.

At my newspaper, we asked Ron Douthitt, a novelist and screenwriter who also had a gay relationship in his youth, to reflect on the film, which he saw in a November screening. We hoped his perspective would add to our readers’ understanding of this controversial story in this film version of Pulitzer Prize-winner Annie Proulx’s short story and Pulitzer Prize-winner Larry McMurtry’s script. An excerpt:

“If you’ve ever felt the kind of love where the feeling so far transcended the sex, when spending time with that person anywhere is all that matters, then this story is for you. If you’ve ever shared the kind of love, when the thought of just knowing if the person with whom you share that bond is going to be safe and all right — with or without you around — allows you to sleep at night, then this story will touch you deeply. The only unusual element is that the story revolves around two men.”

I’m really looking forward to Narnia opening up here in France. I’ve seen posters for it all over the place and they always make me stop and stare. It just looks beautiful.

I think Brokeback Mountain is likely to prove a very good film. I just honestly have no interest in watching it. I’m entirely bored by cowboys. :)

Memoirs of a Geisha - that reminds me, I really want to read the book.

Which reminds me (and this has nothing to do with films), but I just finished reading The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, and I recommend it highly. It’s entirely depressing when good books come to a close.

I’m with you on Brokeback Mountain Ingrid. I don’t like westerns particularly much and sadly the only reason I would see it is the curiousity factor, and I’m not sure that’s entirely fair to the film.

Do read Memoirs of a Geisha, I read it years ago and really, really enjoyed it! Can’t wait to see the movie.
