Looking for something a little more low-key than Serenity this weekend? There are a couple of new releases that have received somewhat less attention, but may be worth a look.

Fans of 19th century Russian literature, or those who have a hankering for modern takes on time-tested stories might be interested in Three Days of Rain. Writer/director Michael Meredith has taken six of Anton Chekhov’s short stories and woven them into a tale about six ordinary folks in Cleveland, Ohio. When a three day rain storm strikes the city, the six are faced with unexpected challenges. From the site: “In a world of movies that favours explosions over emotions and actions over plot, Three Days of Rain succeeds in drawing out the subtleties of life.”

Disney’s latest adventure in sports feel-good stories, The Greatest Game Ever Played, opens this week as well. Based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, who at the 1913 U.S. Open upset the reigning champion to take the title and did so while battling societal tensions and wide-reaching class distinctions. I’m not sure, given that it is a Disney film, about the depth and attention that are given to these issues, and I’m assuming that much more emphasis is placed on the game itself.

If you can stomach any more terrorist talk, the limited release of The War Within might be right up your alley. The movie tracks the thoughts and movements of a Pakistani individual involved in a planned attack on New York City. As the attack draws near, he unexpectedly gets cold feet, struggling with his conscience and notions of right and wrong.

New out on DVD this week, for those of you that just want to cuddle up on the couch and eat popcorn all weekend (appealing? oh yes.), we have:
