Are Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett too old to play Robin Hood and Maid Marian?
February 25, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
If Russell Crowe can play Robin Hood, then I guess Cate Blanchett can play Maid Marian. She’s just signed for the Ridley Scott-directed movie for Universal Pictures. Once called "Nottingham," the movie is currently undergoing a name change.
Ok, so why do I sound a little skeptical about these two? Because they both seem kind of old to play these roles. Russell Crowe is 44 (or so says his IMDB page), but seems a good 10 years older.
And even though Blanchett is listed as 39 on her IMDB page, I think she’s a good 8 or 10 years older than that. Wow, I’m cynical, aren’t I? And probably an ageist, to boot. She’s just always seemed older to me, and I mean that in the most respectful way. She’s a great actress.
What do you guys think? Good casting? Or horrible mistake?

I really don’t know what to think about the casting of this movie. I agree that casting older actors is a little on the odd side but then Scott may be having the idea that he wants Crowe to portray a slightly more mature and rough hewn Loxley! A huge fan of Crowe in Gladiator i don’t know if he is the right choice for this character. After all although Robin Hood is a legend and it is a legend that oozes Englishness and i’m a little dissapointed that Hollywood has again failed to choose a British actor to portray a British hero. We will see how this one works out. Im a huge fan of the Robin Hood legend and at the moment, until i know more about this project im really not holding my breath!
