Connery To Be Honoured By AFI

by Erin Harvey on November 14th, 2005

Holy moly, is Sean Connery really 75 years old? Impossible! I feel so dirty, so, so…Anna Nicole Smith-like to still think he is one of the suavest men on earth. With age comes a certain dignity, as well as the opportunity to be on the receiving end of “Lifetime Achievement Awards”.

The American Film Institute has decided that the Great Scot is more than worthy of the honor for his decades-spanning contributions to film. He’ll be presented with the award at a ceremony in Los Angeles in June of next year.

One thing you may not know about Connery is that his start in acting came after the 1953 Mr. Universe body-building competition, where he placed 3rd. This exposure (take that as you will) led to a spot in the chorus of a touring company, several stage productions, and finally a film contract with MGM in the late 50’s.

Although everyone seems to be focussing on his portrayal of British super agent James Bond throughout the 60’s, I think it’s a bit unfair to ignore the wider body of his work which has included other films of note. Who can forget Gena Rowlands hassling his goofy, charming self in Playing By Heart? Or as a reclusive writer in Finding Forrester in 2000? Addled dad in Indiana Jones? Need I go on? His roles in both popular and critically acclaimed films has cemented his place in cinematic history. If only he could give another 75 years.
