Dreamgirls Jumps on the Musical Bandwagon

The Phantom wasn’t terribly solid, Rent has basically been evicted from theatres, and yet here we have another stage-to-screen adaptation in the works that has the potential to either be a lot of fun, or a huge flop.

The popular theatrical production tells the tale of the formation and rocketing fame of an all girl singing group: The Dreamettes. The road to success is a bumpy one for the ladies, as their manager shoves them out of the sulty world of R&B into the appearance conscious pop music scene. Fame, like money however, doesn’t buy happiness, and the ladies are confronted by the uglier side of the entertainment business.

Casting has just been announed for the movie version, which will begin shooting in January for a December 2006 release. Just who has been chosen to be the Dreamettes? Glad you asked. Destiny’s Child front woman Beyonce Knowles, American Idol’s Jennifer Hudson, and From Justin to Kelly costar Anika Noni Rose.

The teaser trailer is now available for a sneak peek. Here’s hoping that they manage to do this musical properly, and that Beyonce’s face is not going to be plastered on the screen 80% of the time.
