Dreamworks Up for Bidding

by Administrator on October 25th, 2005

Dreamworks SKG

There’s been a lot of back and forth regarding the possible take over of Dreamworks SKG by several other Hollywood studios. Formed in 1994 by the powerhouse trifecta of Stephen Spielberg, Jeffery Katzenberg and David Geffen, Dreamworks SKG is in on-again, off-again relationships with both Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios regarding possible takeover bids.

NBC’s Universal had originally tendered a $1 billion dollar bid, with an agreement to take on the $500 million in debt, but following the poor box-office showings of Dreamwork’s films like The Island, the number was whittled down to a scant $100 million, causing negotiations to stall.

Viacom’s Paramount Pictures was also interested in acquiring the studio, though they had not yet tendered an offer. This lack of action is attributed to the fact that the parent company plans to split into two distinct entities in the next year or so.

Dreamworks and Universal appear to be back at the table following their little stint of not talking to each other and it looks as though NBC is the front-runner for a future deal.
