It’s a Story About Bambi…
My dear friend, Lori Hall Steele, is in a dire situation and needs our help. She’s been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, hasn’t been able to work in months, and is seriously close to losing the home where she and her 7-year-old son, Jack, live.
Ironically, three years ago — when Lori was in perfect health — she wrote an essay that finally appeared in The Washington Post earlier this summer, after she was already gravely ill. It’s all about a conversation she had with Jack after watching Bambi, which we all know includes that horrifying scene where Bambi loses his mother.
Jack wanted to know whether Lori would always look after him. How could she reply? She knew even then that the Universe is unstable that way.

Word about Lori has gotten out via social networking groups like Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and online writer’s groups. People from all over the globe are helping Lori, and it’s been a heartwarming experience all the way around.
It started when my friend, Kris Hains, set up a blog to get the word out. Then the kind folks in a couple of online writer’s groups, Freelance Success and American Society of Journalists and Authors, heard about it and started organizing to help Lori. Another friend, Rachel Weingarten, put up a web site, SaveLorisHouse.com, and a PayPal account for Lori was created. We’re saving that house, one person at a time.

As a mom, I just can’t imagine how awful this situation must be for Lori. And to top it off, writer’s always have terrible health benefits and hardly ever insurance or back up funds — I wasn’t able to contribute 100.00 but I sent what I could through Paypal to the donation address on the Save Lori’s House website. I hope together, we’ll be able to make a difference.
