Just Like Heaven (with surprisingly few, or no, referrences to heaven)

by Jacob Murphy on September 21st, 2005

I don’t think that there is really much further to go in the Romantic-Comedy Genre. The story has been told thousands of times, and we all know how it ends. But all the same, when the main characters meet in the middle of the screen in the big climactic final scene; when the music rises and they kiss each other passionately, it still stirs something.

I went to see “Just Like Heaven” the other day, and it was formulaic, simple, and throroughly enjoyable.
If you’ve seen a single preview for this then I am not going to give anything away here. Reese Witherspoon is hit by a truck and she returns to haunt her apartment, now inhabitted by Mark Ruffalo. Antics ensue, including exorcisms, and the like. Finally they look to Napoleon Dynamite for guidance.

This movie is stronger on the comedy than the romance. It plays around with issues of inner turmoil, destiny, true love, and other somewhat romantic ideas, but doesn’t take any of them to a particularly fulfilling place.

I recommend it as a fine date movie, but take it from me, if you are single (eh-heh heh heh) and seeing it alone, it may stir an emotion or two, but won’t greatly satisfy.
