Mobile Phones Play Movies Too!
Not only can you now take pictures, play mp3’s, play video games, and coordinate your grocery shopping and dentist appointments from your handy dandy cell phone, but thanks to Sony UK you can also watch movies! Not just trailers, not just clips. I’m talking full length, frame-for-frame films. Now why anyone would want to squint at your tiny phone screen for upwards of two hours I don’t quite get, but maybe I’m just not quite hip enough to understand the appeal. I do know that Brits are insanely, unhealthily attached to their mobiles, which is perhaps why Sony had decided to market this option in the Isles.
The move comes in the wake of successful testing with Spiderman 2 and Monty Python and the Holy Grail earlier this year, and the list of available movies has expanded to include Hitch, Ghostbusters, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and Stuart Little. The movies are available on tiny mobile memory cards (MMCs) that look an awful lot like removable flash memory that’s available for digital cameras and PDAs.
I’m not sure when or if this service will be coming to North America or Asia, but Sony is certainly testing the waters with a strong mobile community in Britain.
