New in Theatres This Week

It’s a pretty interesting weekend at the theatres November 11-13th. A little something for everyone in the mix.

Urban culture junkies can head out to see rapper 50 Cent’s celluloid debut, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’. Word on the street is that 50 actually does a decent job at acting, though not up to the strangely high bar set by Eminem in 8 Mile. The film itself though, has drawn a lot of criticism from politicians and community leaders alike for it’s gun-toting ad campaign and show-boating message. Adding fuel to the fire, a 30 year old movie goer was shot in the theatre following a showing of the movie, after an altercation with several men in the bathroom. The Loews chain has subsequently pulled the film from their screens to prevent future incidents.

Billed as “Jennifer Aniston as you’ve never seen her before”, Weinstein Co.’s Derailed stars the Friends staple and British gentleman Clive Owens as two strangers who indulge in a one night stand, only to find that sometimes the consequences aren’t exactly as harmless as you think. Huge bonus thumbs up from me for the use of Sia’s Breathe Me as the trailer song. Love it.

If you’re looking for a show to take the kids to, look no further than Zathura. Two brothers find a strange game in their basement and end up on an action filled space adventure. To win the game, and presumably get back home, they must face meteor showers and aliens in order to reach the planet Zathura.

Also on the big screen are:

  • Bee Season - Richard Gere, Juliette Binoche and Flora Cross play out life’s drama in a family of academics with secrets to hide.
  • The Dark Hours - A Canadian psychological thriller about a violent sex offender and his desire for revenge on his psychiatrist.
  • Pride and Prejudice - Keria Knightley tackles Elizabeth in this Austin adaptation that went over rather will in Jolly Old England.
