Walk The Line

Believe it or not, there are actually other movies coming out this weekend. But only one in wider release, making it seem like all of the other studios are quaking in fear of letting their piddly movies go up against the unbeatable power that is Harry Potter.

Yes, the boy wizard is back for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which is the first in the series to be slapped with a PG-13 rating due to violence and Harry’s interest in -gasp- girls. For readers who are not squealing madly at the prospect of a new two hour date with Harry (or Hermione as the case may be), your alternative is the Johnny Cash bio-flick Walk The Line.

Joaquin Phoenix plays country superstar Cash, who from humble beginnings in Arkansas became a music legend in Memphis playing alongside fellow greats Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Starring as his romantic interest June Carter is Reese Witherspoon and country fans may want to keep an eye out for Shooter Jennings, who plays the part of his father Waylon. I know it’s Potter weekend, but if you’re not into quidditch, try country, it’s the least you can do for Phoenix, who ended up in rehab over this role.

On limited release this weekend we have Paradise Now, an official selection at the New York Film Festival. Two Palestinian friends recruited to carry out a strike on Tel Aviv are intercepted at the Israeli border and plans go awry when new acquaintances cause them to reconsider the necessity of their mission.

Mark Levin’s Protocols of Zion is bound to stir up a whole pot of trouble this weekend as it hits the screens. His film examines the rise of anti-Semitism following the destruction of the World Trade towers on September 11th.
