New in Theatres This Week

by Erin Harvey on December 24th, 2005

It looks like studios are really counting on the fact that people can’t stand to be near their families for an entire weekend and will need to escape to the quiet dark of the movie theatre for a couple hours of respite.

Aside from the apparently very scary Wolf Creek, the execs have also figured that instead of crying children, forced smiles, and burnt turkey, that movie goers will be in the mood for a nice fit of comedic laughter.

This weekend sees Steve Martin ham it up as daddy dearest to 12 kids in Cheaper by the Dozen 2. He proves himself to be a fierce competitor with another neighbourhood father (Eugene Levy) for the crown of #1 Dad.

Dick and Jane are living the good life, until Dick’s company gets caught in a business practice scandal that threatens to send both it, and its employees, spiralling into bankruptcy. Fun With Dick and Jane is one couple’s struggle to hang onto what they have, by any means necessary. This movie carries a Jim Carrey warning.

The Ringer is yet another debuting comedy, about Johnny Knoxville trying his best to rig the Special Olympics, but his fellow participants have already seen through his act, and outclass him in every aspect.

There are some big boys on limited release this weekend as well, with Casanova, Munich and The White Countess all opening to select audiences. Watch for a stream of controversy from the politically sensitive Munich. Steven Spielberg may just have opened a larger can of Israeli-Palestinian worms than he can handle.
