Johnny Depp fans will be happy to know that they can now own one of his more disturbingly quirky performances. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Depp as Willy Wonka, is Tim Burton’s remake of the classic tale of the poor lad who wins a chance to tour the candy factory of a reclusive sweet genius. If you’ve not read the book by Roald Dahl, you really should, and to truly appreciate the creativeness of the story also check out the original 1971 adaptation starring Gene Wilder as the eccentric candy maker Wonka. It was, and is, a favourite of mine.

Landing early for the holiday season is Christmas with the Kranks, last year’s seasonal comedy starring Tim the Toolman…I mean…Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dan Ackroyd. It’s actually based on a very atypical John Grisham novel called Skipping Christmas. Parents experiencing a bad case of empty nest syndrome swear off Christmas, a holiday that they’ve celebrated with joy every year previous. Hilarity ensues as they struggle to suppress the urge to decorate and face criticism from their neighbours.

Warm and fuzzy Christmas movies too sappy for you? You’re in luck. You can waste your time with a completely different genre of movie: the pointless gore-fest. Oh yes, there was blood. Not to mention in-breeding, torture, murder, and pretty much any disgusting thing that director Rob Zombie could pack in. The Devil’s Rejects is now available to own on DVD, and is the sequel to the widely reviled 2003 film House of 1,000 Corpses. I conveniently “missed” this one when it hit theatres after sighing my way through Zombie’s first effort, but if anyone has anything nice to say about it, drop me a comment about why I should give it a watch and perhaps I will.

Or if horror isn’t your scene, say yes to Yes, a steamy love affair of a movie that examines social and cultural taboos through the relationship of a married American woman and her Middle Eastern lover.

Check back in next Wednesday for a new round of releases!

He creeps me out in this role. For this reason alone I don’t think I could ever watch the movie. Ewwww….

He creeps me out too! He just doesn’t look like Johnny Depp at all. More like an airbrushed pedophile. -cringe-

I love the original!!! It’s one of my favorite films too, Erin. :)You’re right…Depp is a little too Michael Jackson in this one.
