Now Available on DVD - Oct. 4th

by Administrator on October 4th, 2005

Not a terrible lot doing this week on the DVD release side of things as far as huge blockbusters that everyone has heard of and seen.

Horror junkies can now add the 2004 version of The Amityville Horror to their collection. As far as I was able to ascertain from those who have seen it, it was worth the price of admission. Mind you the people I had talked to had not seen the original 1979 film starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder. I plan on renting both to do a little old vs. new comparison, so watch for that in the future.

Nicole Kidman’s highly successful U.N. assassination conspiracy flick, The Interpreter, is now available for those going into political intrigue withdrawal. Kidman’s interpreter must convince someone, anyone (even Sean Penn), that something deadly is about to go down at the United Nations General Assembly. Will she succeed in time?

A couple of interesting films came out on DVD this week that I had really meant to see on the big screen, but for some reason or another, never managed to get to.

One is Lions Gate Films release House of D, which was written and directed by Spooky Mulder himself, David Duchovny. Don’t expect aliens and paranormal activity in this movie however, as Duchovny and fellow cast members Anton Yelchin, Robin Williams, Erykah Badu, and Tea Leoni team up to examine a mid-life crisis of sorts. An American artist in Berlin tries to understand his adult self and situation by reflecting back on his life in Greenwich Village during the 70’s. I’m curious to see if Duchovny is as wooden a writer and director as he often appears on screen.

The other is My Summer of Love, a movie that was screened at my local cinema last Wednesday, but frustratingly overlapped with prior commitments. Billed by some as the British film of the year, this story of friendship, drama, danger, and experimentation could go one of two ways in my opinion. It could slip into the den of ineptitude inhabited by the vast majority of movies with lesbian story lines, or it could be one of the few to focus not on the XX imbalance in the relationship, but on the intricacies of love regardless of gender. I’ve got my fingers crossed for the latter and hope, for once, not to be disappointed.

How odd that I wasn’t subjected to ‘My summer of love’ yet… This comes as Ingrid and I were discussing lesbian storylines in bristish movies and shows and how differently they’re treated (this came as we were watching Hex, where the lesbian friend’s feelings for the straight main character are amongst the main plot lines).

Now that you’ve pointed this movie out, we’re going to need to rent it just so we can discuss the topic further!

I also meant to say, I love the website for ‘My summer of love’. Thanks for pointing it out!

I remember hearing something about it a little while back, then it screened here, and this week it’s out on DVD. Kind of one of those titles that keeps popping up. Maybe someone is trying to tell me to see it and that it will correct my poor opinion of lesbian drama.

I hope it’s enjoyable for both of us!
