"Space Chimps" Review

When an expensive space rover disappears into a wormhole, the nation’s space program is put in jeopardy, and an opportunistic senator (voiced by Stanley Tucci) has to come up with a plan. Too dangerous a mission for human astronauts, Mission Control devises a plan to send chimps into space to retrieve the vehicle.

The lucky chimps include Ham III (voiced by Andy Samberg), whose grandfather was the first chimp in space; Luna (Cheryl Hines), a smart chimp whom Ham has a crush on; and Titan (Patrick Warburton), a large chimp whose mind tends to wander.

George Lucas: A Fifth Indiana Jones?

You know, I’m not really sure how I feel about a fifth Indiana Jones. The franchise has done so well — and I even loved the last movie, including the monkey scene.

I would love for it to continue if they focused on Shia LaBeouf as the young Indy taking over the reins from his old man (if Shia can keep himself out of trouble, that is).

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has earned a massive $743.7 million worldwide (#27 on the all-time worldwide list!). The Sunday Times recently asked George Lucas if he, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford would be up for a fifth film. Lucas replied:

DVD Giveaway: "Girlfriends, the Fourth Season"

Bledel and Porter Join "The Good Guy"

Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) and Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights) have joined the cast of the feature film, The Good Guy, scheduled for a 2009 release.

They join Bryan Greenberg, Andrew McCarthy, Aaron Yoo and Anna Chlumsky in the romantic comedy from Julio DePietro.

Porter will play Tommy, a rising Wall Street star in a budding romance with a new girlfriend, Beth (Bledel). He begins mentoring a seemingly hapless new salesman (Greenberg) who befriends Beth, starting a chain of events that might ultimately lead to his downfall.

I’m having Wallstreet/Charlie Sheen (”I’m going to prison, Dad”) flashbacks here. Yes, I know that was a drama and not a romantic comedy.

Johnny Depp to Play Tommy Lee?

Internet rumors are flying around that Tommy Lee has a message for Johnny Depp. The Motley Crue drummer supposedly has called Depp the “best actor ever” and wants him to portray him in a biopic based on Lee’s memoir, “The Dirt”.

Hmmm… based on what I’ve read, the movie would chronicle Lee’s marriages to Heather Locklear, Pamela Anderson, and Elaine Irwin Bergen.

I suppose we’ll also learn more about his hepatitis C diagnosis and what it was like going to prison for kicking Anderson while she was holding their son, Dylan.

Frankly, I really couldn’t care less about his life. And as for Depp playing him? I can’t really see it.

What do you think? Would you go see this movie? Maybe Depp is the only reason people would see it…

Traverse City Film Festival: Sell, Exchange, Give Away Tickets Here

The Traverse City Film Festival starts this week, and I’ve been getting a few notes from folks wanting tickets to sold-out shows or having extra tickets to give away or sell. So here’s a spot where we can all connect with each other and sell, exchange, or give away tickets.

Exclusive: The "Bitch Slap" Girls Interview

I received an email last week about a new film called Bitch Slap. Yep, you read that right. My first thought was, what the heck is this about? But after talking to the three stars of the film, I learned that there’s a lot of thought and insight behind the name. And weapons and cleavage.

Read on for my interview with Erin Cummings, who plays Hel, the corporate powerbroker; Julia Voth, who plays Trixie, the down-on-her-luck stripper; and America Olivo, who plays Camero, the drug-running killer. I talked with them the day before they previewed the movie at Comic-Con.

Jane: Hi, how are you? So you’re going to Comic-Con tomorrow?

Erin: Yes, we’ll start the festivities at 9 a.m. tomorrow, hit the ground running and won’t stop until late Friday night.

Ridley Scott’s "Nottingham" on Hold

I love Russell Crowe in just about everything he does, but he’s going to have a tough time coming anywhere near Alan Rickman’s Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, with Kevin Costner in the title role. Nobody plays the bad guy like Rickman — though, admittedly, if anyone could do it, it would be Crowe.

Crowe is taking on the role in the upcoming feature film Nottingham, Ridley Scott’s take on the Robin Hood story. But he’ll have to wait a bit, because the film’s been put on hold.

Scheduled for a mid-August start date in London, plans are in a holding pattern. No word on why, though you have to wonder if the current stand-off between producers and SAG — and an impending actor’s strike — has anything to do with it.
