Patrick Swayze in Hospital with Pneumonia

by Jane Boursaw on January 9th, 2009

Every time I hear bad news about Patrick Swayze, it just sends me into a funk. He’s so talented and just seems like such a stand-up guy. Between that and the Jett Travolta news, it hasn’t been a good year so far!

Now Swayze has pneumonia, and he’s checked himself into a hospital for observation. The news came out at a press event for the Television Critics Association in L.A. this week. Abbe Raven, president of the A&E Network, which carries Swayze’s new show, "The Beast," had this to say:

"As we arrived here this morning we have some news. Patrick Swayze has checked himself into the hospital. However, he asked us specifically to go forward with today’s panel. We wish him the very best with his recovery."

More after the jump…

Swayze, who is battling pancreatic cancer, had been expected to discuss "The Beast," scheduled to begin airing Jan. 15.

A source told People magazine that he’s undergoing treatment and still fighting. "He felt so bad that he couldn’t be at the TCAs. He’s fighting and doing well, and that’s all anybody can hope for at this stage. He is not at death’s door. Nobody ever knows with cancer, but he’s doing alright. As soon as he’s out, he’s going to try to reschedule as much as he can."

During an interview that aired Wednesday on ABC, the 56-year-old actor told Barbara Walters that the road has been rough. "You can bet that I’m going through hell, and I’ve only seen the beginning of it," he said. "I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life, not lived in the shadow of cancer, but in the light."

It’s amazing to me that he’s been able to continue work on this show, because from what I’ve seen, it has a LOT of action. And he’s giving it 100 percent, said executive producer John Romano. "He’s bringing the force of his own personal struggle into the performance. He does it five days a week, 12 hours a day."

I saw the Barbara Walters interview with him a few days ago. Before that, I know next to nothing about him. He does indeed seem like such a stand-up guy.
