Rebecca De Mornay in for Mother’s Day – a female Freddy or Jason?

September 1, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

Did you like Rebecca De Mornay’s evil nanny role in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle? Well, she just joined the cast of “Mother’s Day,” and filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman says get ready for more. Way more.

"Every time you look at (Rebecca), she is on fire, and to take her to this level, which is like her role in ‘Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ times a thousand, is exciting," says Bousman. "She is not some Freddy Krueger or Jason, so it was important for me to get a real actress."

Ok, so I’m guessing by that, he means that her character won’t be larger than life like Freddy or Jason, but rather a more realistic figure?

The film begins shooting this month in Winnipeg, and is a remake of Charles Kaufman’s 1980 Troma cult classic. The original “Mother’s Day” revolved around three girlfriends who embark on a camping trip, only to cross paths with two brothers who murder and rape to impress their deranged mother.

The remake will re-imagine the film as a psychological thriller in which an evil family returns to the house where they grew up in order to terrorize the new owners and their guests. Hmmm, if De Mornay’s the mom, it doesn’t sound like any realistic mom-next-door type character. It sounds like Jason and Freddy to me, with some Psycho thrown in there.

Jaime King, Shawn Ashmore, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, Matt O’Leary and Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica on True Blood) will also be featured.

Any thoughts on this film?
