Kate Armstrong (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is a New York City chef who runs her kitchen – and her life – with a cast-iron grip. The upscale Greenwich Village restaurant where she whips up her famous quail with truffle sauce is pretty much her whole life. She has no friends, and her closest relationship is with her therapist (Bob Balaban), whom her boss, restaurant owner Paula (Patricia Clarkson) insisted she see.

When Kate’s sister is killed in a car accident, she’s faced with the daunting task of raising her young niece, Zoe (Abigail Breslin). Complicating matters, when she returns to work after a short absence, she finds that her temporary replacement — easygoing, opera-loving chef Nick (Aaron Eckhart) – has taken over her kitchen. He steps down to serve as her sous-chef, but their vastly different approaches to cooking — and life — couldn’t be more different. Of course, they’re hugely attracted to each other.

More after the jump, including a trailer…

Even though you can see the ending coming a mile away (and really, you wouldn’t want it to end any differently), I like this movie because Jones and Eckhart have good chemistry, and the script has some depth (with a tragic accident, you can bet it’s not all peachy keen). But the best parts of this movie are Clarkson and Breslin, who act circles around everyone else. And being in Manhattan, all the apartments are pretty cool, too.

Parents Should Know: Profanity includes a slang term for breasts and some brief, sexually-related dialogue. An off-screen sexual encounter is evident, as well as some on-screen making out and cleavage. Tense drama includes a girl who’s orphaned after her mom is killed in a car accident.
