Ridley Scott’s "Nottingham" is now "Robin Hood." Really?

by Jane Boursaw on February 18th, 2009

I’ve been waiting to hear news about Ridley Scott’s "Nottingham," and the latest is that it’s been renamed to "Robin Hood." Uh, wasn’t there already a movie (or 10 or 20) with that name?

I’m probably one of the few people who liked the Kevin Costner version – named "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," but everyone knows it as "Robin Hood" — but still, it seems like a new version would get more traction with a completely different name. And I liked "Nottingham"!

In a recent interview with MTV, Scott said, "Oh yes, I think we are just going to call it ‘Robin Hood.’ We start in almost 2 months."

And at one point, it looked like Russell Crowe would play both Robin and the Sheriff of Nottingham in the movie. Now Scott is saying that Crowe will play only the title role, and we’ll learn some of his early backstory, most notably that he’s "a bowman in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion."

Scott adds that the idea of Crowe playing both roles "was an idea so far back, way back when at the time I had this proposed to me, and I read it and thought, ‘I don’t really know what it does for it, but it’s alright’ … It is better to simply have the evolution of a character called Robin Hood, who will come out of a point in the Crusades which is the end."

Ok, is it just me, or does Ridley Scott seem totally confused about what he wants to do with this movie?
