Short Takes: Cool Kids’ DVDs

by Jane Boursaw on July 21st, 2008

I get lots of screeners every week, and try to write reviews of all of them. That doesn’t always happen, but I don’t want to give short shrift to the ones that don’t get full reviews.

So here are some recent kids’ DVDs that are darn cool and worth a trip to the DVD store. Or better yet, order it through my link to Amazon.

Corduroy…and more stories about caring. Wow, the little bear has been around a while! This DVD celebrates Corduroy’s 40th Anniversary and includes seven stories on one DVD, narrated by Mia Farrow, Laura Dern, and others. 60 minutes. Available July 29, 2008. Buy it on Amazon.com.

The Naked Brothers Band: Polar Bears. The brothers are growing up! This DVD takes place at their concert stop in New Orleans, where Nat reunites with a childhood friend, sending Rosalina into a jealous frenzy! Meanwhile, Alex initiates an extreme environmental movement to help save polar bears at the North Pole, but devious reporters frame him to appear as a conceited rock star who hates Santa. Shame on them! Special Features: Green Tips from the Band; Four Music Videos. We love the Naked Brothers around here, and always look forward to their DVDs. On DVD June 17, 2008. Buy It on Amazon.com.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle. My very favorite author as a kid was Beverly Cleary, especially her Ramona and Henry Huggins stories. I was thrilled when my daughter brought home The Mouse and the Motorcycle to read, and now it’s on DVD, as well. Featuring live-action and animation, the star of this story is Ralph, a young mouse who takes a shiny miniature motorcycle out for a spin. Bonus Story: Wee Gillis by Munro Leaf. 60 minutes. On DVD June 24, 2008. Buy it on Amazon.com.

In the Night Garden. This sweet and gentle story is set in a magical picture-book place that exists between waking and sleeping in a child’s imagination. It’s based on a series of half-hour programs on the BBC intended for kids aged 1 to 4 years old. Anne Wood and Andy Davenport, the duo responsible for creating Teletubbies, have created and produced this program. Hmmm, I’m not seeing the exact DVD I have in front of me anywhere on the web. It’s titled simply “In the Night Garden” and includes three DVDs: Intro, Images & Information, and Episodes. Learn more about these sweet characters on their Web site.

I remeber reading “The Mouse And The Motorcycle” when I was in elementary and I also saw the movie on CBS Saturday Morning cartoons. It was a favorite of mine. I would like for my boy to have the same expierience. Cartoons these days are not what they use to be.
