Traverse City Film Festival: Madonna to Screen Documentary
In an email last week to friends of the Traverse City Film Festival (of which I am one), founder Michael Moore announced that Madonna will be appearing for a screening of her film, I Am Because We Are, on August 2, 2008.
The Traverse City Film Festival will be held July 29 - August 3, 2008, in Traverse City, Michigan (my home town!).
The Material Girl produced and narrated the documentary after traveling to the impoverished nation of Malawi, where her soon-to-be adopted son, David, hails from.
I Am Because We Are delves into the poverty faced by children of the southern African country, how the AIDS crisis is claiming lives, and the conditions that cause disease and other misery there.
More after the jump, including a trailer…
“She takes the viewer through a very personal journey and tries to connect us, living here in the U.S., giving us a window into the way it is for other people in the world,” Moore said. “You’re extremely moved when you watch it. You understand very clearly why she’s devoted so much of her life to the people of Malawi.”
In an email on Friday, Madonna wrote, “I am very excited to come to Michigan to show my film. The film is a labor of love, and I am happy that I can bring it home to my roots with the help of Michael.”
After watching the film about a month ago, Moore asked Madonna for permission to screen it at the Film Festival. Moore has a home near Traverse City, and Madonna has ties here, as well. Her dad, Silvio, owns a vineyard and winery in Leelanau County, northwest of Traverse City.
Bits and pieces of T.C. Film Festival news are hitting my inbox, and I’m excited about seeing this film and possibly meeting Madonna. The documentary will be shown at the renovated downtown State Theatre, which seats 540. Afterwards, Madonna will answer questions from the audience.
